As such, Richard aims to harness the strengths of Moorfields’ global leaders in vision research across academia and in collaboration with industry to achieve major international impact and improve the lives of patients living with the threat and reality of sight loss. ![]() Together, Moorfields and UCL are the world’s most successful hospital-university partnership for ophthalmology, covering the spectrum of experimental medicine to late-stage clinical and surgical trials, ocular imaging, visual assessment, data science and artificial intelligence. In 2020, Richard was additionally appointed as Moorfields’ Clinical Director of Research & Development giving him leadership responsibilities for the strategic development and operational delivery of Moorfields joint research programme with University College London. He has also driven the creation of multi-professional clinical teams for the management of complex inflammatory eye diseases and is committed to enhancing subspecialist post-graduate training. In London, he has forged partnerships with St Thomas’ Medical Eye Unit and Great Ormond Street Hospital for the care of both adults and children. This followed 7yrs in clinical academic roles linked between Bristol and London, initially as Consultant Senior Lecturer, then as Associate Professor affiliated with NHS appointments at both Moorfields and Bristol Eye Hospitals. In 2018, Richard was appointed as the Director of Moorfields’ Uveitis & Scleritis service, the largest specialist clinical service of its kind in western medical practice.
